The Kids and Critters’ volunteer program gives you the opportunity to participate helping us in different activities, on which you can learn and visit beautiful places in the Yucatan Peninsula.
You can participate in any of the different activities
It will be a great experience for you!
The areas on which you can participate are:
The Pink Caribbean Flamingo and Aquatic Birds Conservation Program
The Flamingo Conservation Program has three main objectives:
- Nesting zones protection
- Assurance of feeding zones under good environmental conditions
- Guarantee freshwater flow in critical zones
Our first objective is one of the most important ones, and the one we need more help with. If you like conservation focused activities this is a great opportunity, on which you will know important aspects about Flamingos’ reproduction and conservation.
You can also participate monitoring aquatic birds once a year; you will love to see the Tiger-Heron.
Specific activities to do:
- Monitoring routes on the periphery of the nesting zone
- Ringed flamingos observation
- Monthly Flamingo and Aquatic Birds population census
- Caring and handling of rehabilitation flamingos
- Participation on environmental education and research activities
Impacted zones reforestation
This program as a wide objective
Diversification of the greenhouse activities with the purpose to offer productive alternatives that will bring an economical benefit to the inhabitants inside the protected natural area and its influence zone communities, as well as create an educational and recreational-formative space on which it can be taught the importance of the species inside the greenhouse area, plants and birds.
As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to contribute to recovery the areas that have been impacted by hurricanes, forest fires and productive activities.
The activities start in May when the flamingos begin their reproductive cycle and when the raining season starts which lead to the plant production on the greenhouse.
Specific activities to develop during the impacted zones reforestation:
- Collection and farming of seed and native plants of Yucatan
- Dirt filling bags
- Almacigos preparation
- Handling of plants
- Watering plants
- Reforestation
- Bird watching
These works are made from May through October, so you have the opportunity to participate for a considerable time to learn and visit beautiful places.
